Complexity generally has a negative connotation. For some parts of the Value Chain however, complexity represents a true source of value. Better understanding of the different parts of the Value Chain value complexity can be a great help in truly optimizing the value of Complexity.
Some parts of the value chain simply hate complexity – it drives up throughput times, inventories, waste, and generally drives up costs. Other parts of the value chain love it. Better fit with consumer needs, better ability to support trading partners, support for the brand message, etcetera can all derive value from complexity. To truly optimize this trade-off between the downsides and business value complexity brings – and keep it optimized – the different parts of the Value Chain will have to be able to effectively interact with each other. This requires an appropriate language.
